The Tale of Despereaux

I'm such a geek. I can't wait to see this movie.

I absolutely love The Tale of Despereaux. If you haven't read it, go right now to the bookstore and buy it. I'm not even sending you to the library as usual. It's worth owning. And after you've had a chance to read it you could even share it with the children.

Bravery, chivalry, honesty, selflessness and all kinds of virtues are extolled and yet not preachy -- just a plain good story. You can't get better than that.

This DOES look great. We might even take the kids.

I am really intrigued; I clicked through to the Amazon page and found reviews running the gamut from "horrible!" to "wonderful!" I trust your judgment, however, and think I'll add it to my cart.

Based on the description, this reminds me a bit of "The Mouse and His Child", also a wonderful book about courage, love, and the deep longing for home and family. It, too, is pretty dark for a children's book, but we love it. I discovered it at the library years ago, and in 2001 it was reprinted. A delight! (As well as a great vocabulary builder... "chthonic", anyone? This book sent us to the dictionary quite often!)

Ooh, a new book to ponder! I'm off to amazon to check out The Mouse and His Child. Thanks ME!

Whoa, I just read the negative reviews at amazon. I'm glad I didn't read the reviews before reading the book! I'm also glad the good reviews are 10-1 compared to the bad ones. Perhaps I'm not as critical because I couldn't help but fall in love with Despereaux. (But then I absolutely love Reepicheep too.)

I noted that ratio, too. Anyway, it sounds like the overwhelming majority, and serious literature fans such as yourself, love it. Good enough of a recommendation for me! :)
