Off to College We Go
In just 15 days Christian and I will leave for college. He'll stay and I'll come home after three days. I asked my girlfriends for advice and they all tell me the same thing, "Be prepared to cry all the way home." That goes without saying. But what else is there I should know? Well, besides the fact that I have to buy extra-long twin sheets because regular sheets don't fit dorm beds and the extra-long sheets have to be special ordered. All advice from moms who've "been there, done that" welcomed. Especially if your kid went to Steuby.

One funny thing is how they get jealous when they find out you're having fun at home. Say you go to Cedar Point, they'll say, "How could you go without me!" Never mind all the fun things they're doing at college. :-)
LOTS of stores sell extra-long twin sheets this time of year. Check out BedBath&Beyond, Linens and Things.... and be sure the dorms ALL have x-tralong twins, sometimes it varies even within a university
JC Penneys has a whole "dorm dept" this time of year, near the linens and household dept....at least they did in NYS when I was helpng my sister and niece shop for college last week.
The most loved accessory of my daughter was the big pillow with arms....so you could sit/recline in bed comfortably to read. (it looks like the back and arms of a plump upholstered armchair). Along the same vein, she loved her bed desk....best described as a pillow contraption with a hard writing surface on the top side. Some even have a built-in battery operated light. Maybe they are called lap desks.
Her dorm desk was overwhelmingly used for all her computer equipment and keyboard, so if she was just reading and highlighting, she preferred to do it from bed or the floor, lounging upon her armchair pillow.
I'm so excited to hear he is going to FUS....what is his major? How far is the drive for you?
Hi Maureen! You know I'm still kicking myself for not getting a picture of us at the IL conference. I brought my camera with me and didn't get any pictures.
Christian is majoring in nursing. It's about a 5 and a half hour drive. We have some friends in Pittsburgh, about another 40 minutes east, who I'll stay with while I'm there. Plus they'll look in on Christian for me from time to time.
Thanks Renee for the heads up. His dorm room does have the extra long sheets, but I didn't realize that I could look elsewhere for the sheets. Though they were reasonably priced through FUS.
We'll just have to plan to get together again in the future!
Maybe we'll see you at FUS some day!
Oh man! My ds was a freshman at FUS last year, in the brand new St. Louis dorm, and he had a regular length bed. But he's probably going to join a household based in Trinity, and so is switching dorms this year. I'll have to have him check on the bed size there, as we no longer have any extra long sheets!
